The New Generation of Leaders

27 03 2009

umnoWe have already known the results of the UMNO general election. Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak will team up with Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the duos will be flanked by three strong leaders; Hishammuddin, Shafie Apdal and Zahid Hamidi. This team is most probably the best team of leaders we have ever seen in the history of UMNO (I doubt about Shafie; It should’ve been Rais Yatim). These are the new generation of leaders. They represent the idealism and aspiraton of the generation which were born after Merdeka.

I would like to highlight some of the ideas that will be brought in by Najib to UMNO according to his opening speech of the joint wanita, pemuda and puteri conference. The rights to elect leaders will be given to more UMNO members. The quota system will be discarded. This is killing two birds with a stone. Once become a reality, it will diminish money politics in the party; you can bribe 300-400 delegates, but it’s impossible to bribe  say, 1 million members who will vote in the UMNO general election. This idea will also reflect the aspiration at the roots level. Their voices will be heard and their choices will be reflected in the results.

Najib also said that UMNO needs a new strategy when training new potential leaders or members. A good and comprehensive module should be introduced to new party members and leaders. A 5 day course similar to the BTN course should be good enough to teach them all around about the party principals, aspirations, history and its true struggle. UMNO has all the resources, just waiting to be implemented. This program if given in a comprehensive manner, can attract the young generation to join UMNO.

I would like to add a few ideas that Najib should do after he took the oath as our new PM. Make it compulsory to every BN MP to have his own blog or website. The best is to have a shared domain and comprehensive list of all BN MPs websites. Websites should be uploaded regularly, reflecting MPs activities and schedules. This will create a ‘close to rakyat’ atmosphere and will again strengthen BN relationship with rakyat.

We are all waiting for the historic moment when Najib sworn in as the 6th Prime Minister of Malaysia next month. To Dato’ Seri Najib, all the best and may Allah bless Malaysia.
